Speaking Out Against Hate, Standing with #Charlottesville

"..this mob of white supremacists shouting racial and ethnic slurs, using Nazi symbolism, and violently killing a peaceful protester do not reflect the American ideals we fight to preserve each day..."

This past weekend, America saw evil. A kind of racist evil we haven’t witnessed this publicly in decades. No longer hidden, angry faces were illuminated and the violent intentions were clear. However, this mob of white supremacists shouting racial and ethnic slurs, using Nazi symbolism, and violently killing a peaceful protester, do not reflect the American ideals we fight to preserve each day. While this time hateful terror groups descended on Charlottesville, VA, they have organized and grown in communities across the country.

So, today we cannot turn a blind eye. We must not let these actions become accepted in mainstream culture. Today I stand with the millions of Americans who refuse to let those extremists speak for us. We know that a true patriot treats all neighbors with respect and demonstrates his love for our great nation by celebrating our diversity of background, heritage and viewpoints.

I care deeply about this issue and realize my stepping forward as a candidate and speaking out in this public forum may make me a target, as these groups are active within our 14th district. However, I will not be silent in my outrage. I will continue to fight for liberty, justice and for equality. And I hope that you will join me.

Naperville, IL –  Democrat Lauren Underwood announced today that she will seek election to the U.S. House of Representatives in the Illinois 14th Congressional District. Lauren grew up in Naperville, Illinois and is a graduate of Neuqua Valley High School.

“I’m running for Congress because this moment in history requires courageous people to stand up and fight to restore our voice in Washington.”

Lauren is a registered nurse and health policy expert. Her public service experience includes clinical research at the National Institutes of Health and bolstering our nation's preparedness for natural disasters, bioterrorism agents, and infectious disease threats.

“I’m stepping forward to fight for families who know that strong jobs, smart investments, and access to affordable health care will help get our region back on track.”

Lauren will bring first hand clinical knowledge to Washington. Drawing on experience implementing the Affordable Care Act, she will propose measures that protect and expand access to quality health care for northern Illinois families.

"It's time for Congress to stop the partisan fighting and start working together to get things done for everyday Americans."

Lauren served as a Senior Advisor at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under President Obama. During her time in the administration, Lauren helped communities across the country prevent, prepare for, and respond to public health emergencies.

“America has never succeeded by looking backwards; we succeed when we look forward, when we innovate, when we lead, and when we build.”

Lauren is running to represent the 14th Congressional district, which includes parts of DeKalb, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, and Will counties.

"I'm looking forward to listening to and engaging with all voters. Across the 14th, our values of family, security, honesty, and accountability are on display in our schools, businesses, and communities. It's time we have an elected official who shares these family values."

Lauren currently works for a Medicaid-managed care plan in Chicago. Lauren is also a teacher, preparing future nurse practitioners through Georgetown University’s online master’s program. Lauren is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Johns Hopkins University and currently lives in Naperville.
